I don't know too much about Jetspeed. But I wrote a few comments below,
anyway.

I don't know. I would be interested in that, too. My first guess is that you
have to write a new controller or a new control by your own.

I think a new controller could do a good job for this but that might not be
very sophisticated.

There are a few "boxes"  (= HTML-table) which are used to render the output
of Jetspeed:
- box, which contains the whole portlet
- box, which contains the title bar with the icons
- box, which contains the portlet's body
- box, which contains the pane of a controller. The portlet set of a
controller is displayed inside of that one.

All you can do with styles is applying different classes of a css-file to
each of these tables. Most often this is restricted to changes of the border
and the color. 
If you want to do more, you can simply extend the data that a style
contains. To apply these extensions you have to implement your own controls.
