How to get roles in vm?

Hi all,
I am tweaking the VMs Jetspeed uses to create the layout (like top.vm,
multicolumn-customize.vm etc) and in one of them I need to display some text
depending on the role of the user.
 
I know that $data gets me the Jetspeed rundata, but how do I get the role(s)
of the user from this?
