Today, the Portlet community projects on Java.net welcomed a new project named "Gems".

The goal behind Gems is to position itself as the primary home of JSR-168 Compliant portlets. Think of these portlets as the Gems of a portal page.

Since the license for this project is ASF based, others can contribute to the project, use the code as they wish, and modify it.

Additionally, the project's portlets can be lifted and used in both commercial products such as Bea Portal or IBM Portal, as well as Open Source portal platforms such as JetSpeed, eXo, and LifeRay.

The project will attempt to be the single place where all can learn about and turn to when looking for a general set of portlets that can provide services such as:

   * E-Mail access
   * RSS feeds
   * Calculator
   * Calendar
   * Sports Scores
   * CMS content access and management
   * Horoscope
   * Games
   * Google Search Portlet
   * Ads by Google Portlet
   * And much more

Please feel free to contribute to the project as well as to join the various mailing lists to receive announcements of changes or ask questions of the developers and the project's community.

The project's site is located at:
