Are the portlets remotable?

I am interested in the piece of code that calls the remote 
servlet/portlet container and retrieves the portlet content.
From the code, it appears that all the portlets must reside in the same 
webapp (deployed in the jetspeed webapp).
Am I correct in what I am seeing?
