Michael, Wow... you asked quite a bit here... I'll see what I can do:
- Yes, the Velocity decorators are what you use to customize the "layout" of J2 pages. These can be made deployable like portlet apps, search this archive for examples... I am sure I gave an example here recently. "layout" and "portlet" decorators are specifed per page in the PSML.
- The profiler is used to select PSML pages to display given the request url, (and potentially session/request attributes). It is an involved topic and you can find many discussions on this list about it. Also, look at the profiler design document available in the design-docs directory in svn.
- Docsets have been deprecated in M4 in favor of declarative menus. There is a rather complete document on declarative menus in the portal-site design-docs directory as well.
I am more or less the responsible party for the profiler/page-manager and portal-site operation in J2. Feel free to follow up with more detailed questions as they arise. HTH to get started,

Hi, can anybody give me a hint where I can find information about the profiling rules? So far I have understood that they determine the lookup of ... things to display. But "page" and "docset" seem to be examples; what else is there? And where are things looked up? I want to change the picture at the top of the Jetspeed pages. I have a feeling that profiling rules can help me to add one file somewhere. But I cannot figure out what to do. I'm about to copy the whole tigris-subtree and change my file...
