JUBA, 19th August 2011 [Gurtong] - Authorities in Central Equatoria
State (CES) have launched a Civil Society Resource Centre meant to
promote national development in the Republic of South Sudan through
training and information access.

Constructed by Mercy Corps with funding from the United States Agency
for International Development (USAID), the building can accommodate up
to 25 students and is equipped with internet access, a library of
books, audiovisual materials and a hall for networking and training
civil society groups.

Dr. Marial Benjamin, GOSS Minister of Information who was the Chief
Guest representing President Kiir said that the centre will also act
as a uniting venue for the peoples of South Sudan.

The State Governor H.E Clement Wani Konga called for USAID further
support in education and more particularly in sports. He also called
for activists to make use of the Centre as an advantage for fostering
national development in the new State.

“I would advise anyone who don’t want to come to this centre to simply
pick a hoe and go to the field to cultivate,” Konga said. He urged the
youths and men who spend time playing cards and dominos to rather
spend their time positively in the centre’s internet café.

During the launch on Wednesday, Jennifer Links, a USAID Representative
said that the centre acts as a regional hub for civil society and
foster social networking and interaction, helping to strengthen the
social fabric weakened by decades of conflict.

“The Centre’s aim is to increase civil society and citizen
participation in national development, and promote access to
information for all citizens through Information Technology trainings
and access to internet-based media,” she added.

She reiterated USAID commitment to continue supporting the fledgling
nation with development challenges.

Hundreds of guests including the GOSS and State senior government
officials convened at the Central Equatoria State’s Ministry of
Information where the centre is constructed to grace the day.
