RUMBEK, 18th August 2011 [Gurtong] – The United Nations Mission in
South Sudan (UNMISS) Coordinator in Lakes State, Renuka Childambaram
briefed the State Ministers on Wednesday about the new mandate of
supporting the rule of law and developmental activities across Lakes
State and South Sudan.

Childambaram assured the Ministers and Advisors that the new mission
serves to protect civilians and promote human rights as granted by the
UNMISS mandate in Lakes State.

The briefing was held at the office of Governor, also attended by the
Lakes State Legislative Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. John Marik Makur who
called upon the UNMISS to support parliament through capacity building
on human rights and rule of law.

Renuka said that, “In the earlier mission before Independence, UNMISS’
mandate was peace keeping, but now the mission will fully assist in
training senior police departments in various activities in order to
run their daily programs”.

Lakes State Governor Hon. Chol Tong Mayay guaranteed the Council of
Ministers that his government will facilitate UNMISS work in the
State.

“It is very important for the Legislature and Executive to know what’s
in the new mandate and the role of UNMISS presently in South Sudan for
the next one year. I think it’s our role to disseminate this
information to our communities”.

The UN Security Council resolution 1996 (2011) adopted by Security
Council at its 6,576th meeting on July 8, set up a new peace building
mission in South Sudan. This followed the Independence of the Republic
of South Sudan on July 9, 2011 upon its proclamation as an independent
State.

The new United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) will focus in
various sectors such as peace building, rule of law, training on
capacity building, human rights, civilians protection and development.
