JUBA, 21st August 2011 [Gurtong] – According to the Association for
Media Development in South Sudan, (AMDISS) Hon Secretary Dr. Hakim
Dario, challenges in the media sector of the newest nation are still
enormous and that needs more joint efforts.

While giving a lecture to media stakeholders and practitioners at the
AMDISS Centre in Juba on Friday, Mr. Hakim Dario decried of the
alarming ignorance both in the government and the media circles.

He said policies to streamline the operation of the media sector are
yet unclear as they don’t mainly operate on the principles of media
and journalistic ethics, starting from the power and independence of
the industry.

“The relationship between the media and the government is on the basis
of the rule of law,” Hakim said.

The AMDISS Hon Secretary added that investors have used compromising
mechanisms to get licenses through the support of senior government
officials who issue directives for grant of licenses in what he
described as “chaos”.

AMDISS was established in 2003 by senior South Sudanese journalists.
It is aimed at addressing the news and information environment in the
country and to improve the capacity of local journalists to respond to
the crucial issues of human rights, good governance, freedom of
expression and democracy in the new State.

The AMDISS has presented a number of key issues meant to streamline
clear media policies in the Republic of South Sudan. He pointed out
that as the overall media umbrella in the country, AMDISS has planned
to;

Champion a move to establish South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation and
a Media Communications Commission to take over administration of the
media industry in South Sudan hence ensuring that it is totally
independent from the government.

He reiterated the association’s effort in monitoring the process of
the South Sudan media bill which is currently at the Ministry of
Justice undergoing legal amendments before its sent to parliament for
Legislation.
