The Lakes state minister of health, Samuel Mayek Deng, told press on
Monday that all staff who were on strike due to the non-payment of
wages will resume their normal duties on the same day.
He gave assurances that the ministry administration will give them
full employment, and payment will begin in September.
Mayek, said that the payment of unclassified staff will be handled by
a committee, which will also deal with the government payroll system.
He explained that he has written a directive to his administrative
staff instructing them to employ the qualified staff by September 9th
and to ensure that they receive their salaries in the same month.
The head of striking staff in Yirol East, James Adut Majok confirmed
the ministry’s decision, saying that the staff will be returning to
their health care centres immediately.
Last Friday more than 36 PHCC were indefinitely closed by health
workers, due to the non-payment of salaries. These were staffed by
120, some of whom had not received their full salaries since 2009.
After NGOs ended their support for the centres, the government did not
take up the full financial slack.
In the 2010 elections, the Lakes state governor pledged to improve
health, education and security if he took power, but once in he gained
his seat complained of insufficient funding needed to realise his
goals.
