abyei-area-miraya-picThe Head of the United Nations Interim Force for Abyei (UNISFA), Lt Gen Tadesse Werede Tesfay, has reiterated his call for the withdrawal of the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) as "key to resolving the log jam" in Abyei. In a press release, the Force Commander said UNISFA had stepped up patrols in the disputed area. Lt Gen Tesfay made the declaration during a meeting on 25 August 2011 with some 60 Ngok Dinka tribal chiefs, accompanied by some members of the defunct Abyei administration. At the meeting, the chiefs requested a timeline for the return of people displaced from the area. They also demanded compensation from the Government of Sudan for property lost during "during the hostilities that forced them out of Abyei." According to the statement, the Force Commander assured them that he will raise their demands in the coming weeks with the authorities in Juba and Khartoum.
