Machar told the audience that the UN day means a great deal to the
people of South Sudan as they have fought for so many years, and this
is the first time they have been able to celebrate the day as an
independent nation.

South Sudan became an independent nation on 9 July after more than two
decades of civil war with North Sudan.

Machar said the day marked an end to a turbulent period of South
Sudan’s history which began in 1820 has now been closed.

The date 1820 has been officially recognised as the beginning of South
Sudan’s struggle for independence. During the 1820-1956
pre-independence era South Sudanese fought against slave traders and
colonialists.

Machar said South Sudan is committed to supporting regional peace and
stability with all its neighbours.

He added that South Sudan will negotiate with Khartoum to resolve the
outstanding issues, saying the two neighbouring states “have
inter-dependencies that cannot be downplayed,” and that South Sudan is
also interested in the peaceful resolution of the recent conflicts
involving both Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile states with the central
government in Khartoum.

He said the South Sudan has insecurity issues to tackle such as the
cattle-raiding and the rebellions. He explained the violence in region
is partly as a result of the long periods of war the state has been
through.

He urged the youth to refrain from violence.
