Juba, 29th September 2011 [Gurtong] - The United Nations (UN) has
lauded representation of President Salva Kiir during the General
Meeting held in New York last week, while saying that the President
conveyed the right message at the right time.

The UN said that Kiir “Showed commitment to peaceful relations with
South Sudan’s neighbour in the North, and to establish a solid
foundation for the new nation, based on political pluralism, good
governance, transparency and accountability.”

Upon her return from attending the UNGA meeting also, the Special
Representative of the UN Secretary General (SRSG) to South Sudan Hilde
F. Johnson said that, the international community would love to see
progressive implementation of the promised reforms in the fledgling
nation with daunting challenges.

Hilde pointed out that, without transparency, accountability and
establishment of the new nation, South Sudan stands little support
from the international community.

“It is unacceptable when money devoted to developing the new nation
ends up in private pockets and foreign bank accounts,” she challenged
the government.

“Investigations and prosecution against those involved should be the
preconditions for South Sudan to succeed in building a new, strong and
stable nation,” She added

“The engagement by the Legislative Assembly and civil society in
requesting additional actions against corruption is positive. To win
the fight against corruption, all parts of society need to engage,”
she said.

The UN, an umbrella of the international community is working hard to
see that, the newest State does not fail as many critics had earlier
warned before it gained her independence.
“The way the Government of the new Republic manages its own security
in Jonglei State and elsewhere, and the critical processes in relation
to governance, transparency and accountability, political pluralism
and protection of human rights, will be important for South Sudan’s
image internationally,” she added.

“We are hopeful that our report to the Security Council will say that
the Government of South Sudan is not only conveying the right message
at the right time, but also doing the right thing - in accordance with
the principles the President has so clearly expressed.”
