JUBA, 5th October 2011 [Gurtong] - President Salva Kiir is expected to
meet his Sudanese counterpart, President Omar Hassan al Bashir over
the remaining outstanding issues on Abyei region, border demarcation
and oil resources, the Government Spokesperson Dr. Barnaba Marial has
announced.

Speaking shortly after the council of ministers meeting last Monday,
Dr. Marial who is also the Minister of Information and Broadcasting
told the press in Juba that, “President Salva Kiir informed had
informed the council that sometimes this week he will be visiting
Khartoum following a telephone conversation he had with President
Bashir,” he disclosed.

He added that, “he shall be travelling with a huge ministerial
delegation. The two partners (Kiir and Bashir) are expected to discuss
the outstanding issues in regards to Abyei region, Border demarcation
and oil resources among others.”

President Kiir arrived last week in Juba after attending the United
Nations General Meeting held in New York for the first time since
South Sudan was declared independent. Kiir assured the UN Assembly
members that he was ready to maintain peace with Sudan.

The two countries have been at loggerheads for decades resulting to
over 2.5million estimated deaths in a bloody civil war which ended in
2005 when a six year deal, the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, (CPA)
was signed.

However, despite marking the end of CPA by South Sudan gaining
independence, political analysts have warned of continued instability
in the two countries if the outstanding issues are not resolved
quickly.
