It is to do with the rrdtool used.  Nothing at all to do with PHP as
php just calls rrdtool to create the graphs.

So the answer is why does one rrdtool look like your first graph and the
other look like your second; what are the differences between the
rrdtool and/or the relevant libraries?

I have heard it is to do with what fonts are installed, but cannot
find any reference about it.
