Have you created a test php page with the phpinfo(); function? It will spit out all info about your php install. See if you have a "mysql" section. Perhaps it wasn't compiled in? Assuming you used ports, did you use lang/php4-extensions to do so? It's the easiest way to get the extensions you want (via 'make config')
