Could this problem possibly be hardware-dependent?  The other couple of systems 
I've tried
JFS as root on were P4 and a P4 Celeron respectively.  Both showed the problem 
as
described earlier, but I've just now completed a SuSE install on a elderly PII, 
which
went just fine.
