just for curious, you are familiar seeing kernel panics with ext2 because of
severe file system corruption? that's very extrange for me, I found ext2
__very__ robust
maybe have very I/O intensive tasks and a quite big ammount of dirty cache?
That can be tunned, so filesystem corruption will be less likely

I don't understand why the move if file sytem corruption is not caused by
the filesystem itself but for not properly shutting down the system
Also note that some filesystems doesn't support data journaling, just
metadata, and that may be a very important issue
