Looks like the new PDF reder will be a holiday project. I didn’t catch my taxi
until 7:00 last night, and just didnt feel like playing with software by the
time I got home and got cleaned up. Nonetheless, I’m looking forward to it.
The idea of having a second OCR engine available intrigues me.

Adobe Reader

I'm having pretty good success with JAWS 15 and Adobe Reader DC actually. Here
are a couple of tips I've found:

1. In Adobe Reader XI, when JAWS was processing a large PDF, it would say so.
In DC, it just acts like you're in a blank document. So you just have to wait
it out. Sometimes pressing Control A as if you want to highlight the whole
document helps.

2. For finding a word or phrase in the PDF with JAWS, I use Control Shift F
instead of just Control f. Works fine for me. And that's in both Reader XI and
DC. Control Shift F is the true "Jaws Find" command apparently.

If you're having a different issue with JAWS and Adobe Reader DC, let me know.
I don't see anything that makes me want to rush to upgrade to DC at home. I
upgraded to DC at work, and it's fine, but I don't see anything special about
it. The main point of it was to push you into the cloud some more.

Ted,

Also as an FYI, Adobe Reader DC is bringing up what looks to a
sighted person to be a dialog box inside the program when Ctrl+F is hit to do a
find. Under the text box where you enter the word or phrase to be found there
is a Previous key (activated by Ctrl+Shift+G) and a Next key (activated by
Ctrl+G).

I have no idea if this is an "improvement" to the DC version of
reader or not. That being said, I've had at least one client report that JAWS
15 is not playing well with Adobe Reader DC and we backed him off to Adobe
Reader XI.

I'm also finding out that Freedom Scientific often uses the, "Well,
you need to upgrade to JAWS (insert current version number here) to see if that
fixes it," line. It doesn't disturb me so much that they're pushing upgrades,
as those come about for a reason, but it disturbs me greatly that I hear "to
see if that fixes it." Their own trouble ticket databases should be able to be
searched so that they know whether an update to the software actually addresses
a problem, but I don't know if they don't check that or actually really don't
know. It frustrates me as a tutor and I cannot even begin to imagine how
infuriating this can be for an actual user!
