First, let's just point that YMMV.
My server and main computer run non-stop. This is so they get regular
updates, and because it's easier on my electric bill. When an electrical
device starts up it takes more power to get it started than it does to keep
it running, much like how it takes more pushing to get a stalled car moving
than it does to keep it moving. It's the threshold between potential energy
and kinetic energy at play here and the inertial effects involved.
AS I said, your mileage may vary, and it depends on how often you access
your computer throughout the day. If you're one of those people who only
uses it for a single session throughout the day then it might serve you to
turn it on, do what you're going to do, and then leave it on for a time
afterward, setting your update cycle to hit then for your OS, office suite,
and virus and malware updates. If you use it throughout the day then it's
probably more energy conservative to leave it on.
Note also that unless your computer is unplugged from the wall it's going to
continue to draw power. (In this case "unplugged from the wall can also mean
that it's plugged into a surge protector and the power switch for the surge
protector is turned off)
