Ed,

The arrangement sounds very effective - & more than a little cool.

Some questions:
1) Would this work with the output of your laptop's headphone jack
cabled directly to the mixer board? I am guessing that the USB
sound card may provide a better line out level for the mixer, but
thought I'd best ask.
[Ed said:]
I don't see why it wouldn't work. The USB sound card was
something I had been using anyway -- back before computer
microphones were any good. The card was primarily for input and
Dragon Naturally Speaking. I see no reason why going straight to
the mixer board from the computer would not work.

2) Is the "jack" coming off your phone an RJ9, the 2.5mm jack
found on many cordless phones, or something else.
[Ed said:]
It is the RJ 9.

3) Sounds like your mixer provides for multiple outputs (speakers
as well as headphones). I may be misreading that, however,
[Ed said:]
It does. One of the outputs is clearly for monitoring purposes,
but it works fine.

4) Please confirm that you are able to bring in both the phone and
the computer's audio simultaneously to your headphones.
[Ed said:]
I had 3 two-hour calls today. I have the phone coming in the left
side primarily (the side where the microphone boom is located. I
have the computer coming in primarily to the right ear. Usually,
when I'm not going to be on a long call like that where I have to
access my computer, I turn the balance back so I hear the computer
out of both ears, though the right side a little more heavily.

5) Does one need any special input jack or wiring so that the
headset's microphone gets back to your phone & laptop (for Dragon
Naturally Speaking, Skype, or whatever)
[Ed said:]
Nothing terribly special except that some of the jacks on the
mixer board are quarter inch. I need to convert to mini.

6) I am guessing that a Bluetooth transmitter attached to the
mixer would let you work wirelessly, but your real world
confirmation would be appreciated.
[Ed said:]
I think that is right, though I cannot confirm. I've had only
mixed results with Blue Tooth in other settings. At some point I
may try that, but for now, I'll let Blue Tooth evolve a little
more.

Any hardware details appreciated
[Ed said:]
I'm at home now. I'll check the mixer board's info tomorrow.

Sorry for all the questions.

This may be more complex than you were looking for, but I love it
-- and it isn't outrageously expensive.
Here is my set-up.
First, I plug a USB sound card into my computer. I can use it
with different laptops, and all is good. The sound degradation is
minimal.
Next, I plug a phone feed into the headset jack in the desk phone
(Headset Buddy has all sorts of plugs and switches).
I use an ordinary headset, though it has one line for audio out
and the other for the microphone. I'm using a set of Beats, but
that's not necessary. I just want to look cool! <SMILE> Between
thee sound card and the phone, on one side, and the headset, on
the other, I've inserted a mixer board. I think it cost me about
$60. It has all manual switches and controls.
So, by turning the proper dials and switches, I can vary the
volume, gain, base, and other sound attributes. I can also direct
sound output to the speakers on the desktop or my headset. I can
switch ears and can balance how much sound goes to which ear, e.g.
80% of phone in left ear (where the microphone is) and 15% to the
right ear.
The computer sound can likewise be switched from and balanced
between right ear and left ear. Volume of the computer and the
phone can be set independently -- all through the mixer board.
It is a little complex to set up, but it works like a dream. This
set-up also lets the flexibility of the controls be independent of
the headset. I break headsets frequently.
This set up also lets me switch effortlessly (so long as I
remember) between my desk phone and the soft phone (Jabber) in my
computer.
Actually, the above set-up falls a little short of the ideal. I
was hoping to integrate my iPhone so that I could employ all the
above flexibility among my desk phone, my iPhone, and my desk
phone -- all at once.
OK. I'm a little crazy.
PS
I forgot to mention that the microphone doubles as a microphone
for the phones and Dragon Naturally Speaking. No wires to change.

I've been contemplating untethering myself also from the
processor. I don't use the screen at all so my thinking is why be
tethered to the processor.
Has anyone had experience with untethering both the keyboard and
the audio?

has anyone used a dual headset where one ear gets JAWS speaking,
and the other gets the caller's voice? I'd like any
recommendations as I'm looking for one that's not too expensive
($30+) but want most of all good sound.
