John,
You probably have to hold down the FN key on your keyboard in
combination with the regular JAWS commands. The FN key on most laptops
is to the left of the spacebar either the third or fourth key. The FN
key and the Control key on the left are different depending on the model
of the keyboard. I've also seen the FN key at top right. Remember also
that if this is a complete hassle there are two options. One is that you
can change the JAWS keystrokes for the function key commands you use
frequently. The other is to ask the manufacturer of the computer if
their uses of the function keys can be switched so that the FN key is
needed for them and you get to have the regular function keys for your
applications.
