The consequences are that when you remove the drive, you may or may not get
a "Delayed Write Failure Notice. This means that the computer failed to
write everything to the drive which you sent to it. Windows does not always
perform tasks immediately. This is the function of Safely Remove Hardware.
It tells Windows
"OK, I am going to remove this hardware, so you should finish any remaining
tasks which are specified for that drive."
Failing to do this can have a couple of consequences. First, it can corrupt
the entire drive, so that none of the files are visible. Only gibberish
symbols will show up in the file list.
The second consequence is that any of the files destined for that drive may
not be copied, or may be truncated or shortened because the entire file has
not been copied.

Hi, Tom. In case the Safely Remove Hardware option doesn't show up in your
System Tray, Here's how to get the Safely Remove Hardware back into your
System Tray. As someone else said, this is only good for "hard" drives,
not
flash drives.
If you want to remove a flash drive, find the appropriate drive letter
within Computer, press Applications Key, and Up or Down Arrow to Eject
Drive, and press Enter.
To always show all icons in the system tray
1. Open the Start menu with the Windows key
2. Press escape followed by Alt Enter.
3. Tab to the Notification / Customize button and press Enter.
4. Check the checkbox for always turn on all icons and press Enter.
5. Tab to Okay and press Enter.

Hello, everyone.
I am sure this may seem pretty elementary to some, but I actually have
gotten varying opinions on the need to use the "safely remove hardware"
option for USB devices such as USB thumb drives, and USB external hard
drives.
So, I have two questions:
1. Is it still necessary to invoke the "safely remove hardware"
option
when using any of these USB devices? I have heard that in later
operating systems like Windows 7, this is not as necessary as it used to
be.
And
2. How does one easily get to the "safely remove hardware" option,
if
it would be a good idea for me to use it?
I am using Windows 7 and Jaws 16 here.
