This is the first, clear, not to mention short and concise, answer I have
seen to "why ribbon menus".  Thanks.

With this turned off, will the menus look like the kind of menu set-ups that
we used to see - oh so many years ago?  You know - headings and a simple
list of menu items under each heading, instead of "strings"?  I am certain
that I could get used to that again!

Hi, Daniel. The Virtual Ribbon is supposed to make the ribbon menus more
accessible to blind users of JAWS. The disadvantage, though, is that they
block the use of some of the Microsoft shortcut letter combinations. When
the Virtual Ribbon is turned off, these shortcut letter combinations become
available again.
