Hi, Jim. When you enter a word, first, specify the default configuration file with CONTROL plus SHIFT plus D. Then specify English as the language instead of "All Languages". Doing this will cause another option to be displayed in the dialogue box of the Dictionary Manager. Once this new "Synthesizer" choice comes up, specify "Eloquence Software" instead of "All Synthesizers". This will open up a list of choices as to the default language in which the word will be spoken. For your French name, you would choose French as the default language for that word in particular. Then, each time that name is spoken, it will use the French language to pronounce the name.

Ted:

I had no idea that "language" would enter into this discussion. If there is
a way to specify the language in which a word should be pronounced, please
let me know. I imagine that it might have something to do with the dialogue string that you get into when entering a new "dictionary setting"; but, I've
never even seen it. Perhaps, I just have not looked!

Thanks.
Jim H

Are you guys saying JAWS French pronunciation can't handle this? That seems
about as weird as stumbling over Bill or John in English.

Zjeanne might work.

I too know someone by the name, Jeanne. It is almost impossible to
get the "soft" J sound. The closest that I have been able to come,
with her name, is "jian". The sound is correct, except for the
slightly harder "J" sound. At least, I recognize her name, and it's
much better than "Jeannie", or "Janine".
Give it a try.

I suggested Zjawn, but that Jeanne is pronounced like Jee Ann by JAWS.
I have a French Canadian friend, Jeanne, who will tell you that her
name is pronounced Zjawn.

Best from,

Carolyn

I'd probably tell it to pronounce it as zhahn or zhauhn. Thought it's
going to have difficulty in differentiating it from when it talks
about Jean Stapleton or the actress Jean Simmons, not to mention of
any blue jean pants or skirts.
