There are a couple of ways to get JAWS to say what you want to hear after hitting the Space bar. One simply is to press Insert two on the regular number keys. Just keep hitting Space bar until you get what you want. Choices are character, word, and word and character or none. Otherwise, you can hit Insert V and arrow down to that same set of choices, and they'll be set. If you do the first choice by hitting Insert 2, the command lasts as long as you are in that specific program. If you hit Insert V and go into JAWS Verbosity, the changes you make will stay unless you change it again, regardless of what program you are in or if you shut down.
