Might it be that at home program, similar to what FS talked about with JFW
itself, where employees of some companies can get Office for such a reduced
price? If so, it it probably only available to employees of specific
companies.

but it looked like the notice I got when I upgraded in June, 2014. Here's
the exact language:

Upgrade to one of the versions of

I think that is for a monthly subscription to Office 365. It has been
offered for $9.99 a month for a couple of years. It entitles you to free
updates as long as you have the subscription.

Those of you in academia, business, or government be on the lookout. As
most probably know, the new Office is in circulation, and Microsoft is
offering it for $9.95; that's even cheaper than last time. Look for a
notice in your mailbox. I don't know of any super new feature(s), but
that's pocket change for anyone who has a strong urge to upgrade.
