NEWSSIL.TXT
To install the new multi-SSIL on your computer,
you must be comfortable with file management commands
in either DOS or Windows. Windows will not allow you to
complete these steps if you are using an SSIL-enabled Windows
screen access program while you are trying to rename and
replace these SSIL files. Therefore, you must use some other
means of screen access (such as DOS, Braille or sighted
assistance) while performing these steps.
Follow these steps to install multi-SSIL:
1. Locate and rename any old copies of SSIL.DLL that might be
loaded when an SSIL-enabled program starts up. When an SSIL-
enabled program starts, Windows loads any copy of SSIL.DLL
that it can find. Windows will search all directories in your
path, the directory of the starting SSIL-enabled program, and
your \WINDOWS and WINDOWS\SYSTEM directories. If you are unsure
of which copies of SSIL.DLL to rename, rename all of that you
can find, including the SSIL.DLL found in the OPENBOOK directory.
DO NOT RENAME the one in the OPENBOOK\UTILS directory, since
this is the new SSIL you will be copying in the next step.
2. Copy OPENBOOK\UTILS\SSIL.DLL to OPENBOOK\SSIL.DLL. Also copy
it to the directories of any other SSIL-enabled programs you wish
to use simultaneously with Open Book. For example, if you are using
Jaws for Windows installed in the JFW directory, you would copy
OPENBOOK\UTILS\SSIL.DLL to JFW\SSIL.DLL.
3. Copy OPENBOOK\UTILS\SSILEXE.EXE to your WINDOWS directory.
This program is required by the new SSIL.DLL, and it can always
be found by Windows if it is placed in the WINDOWS directory.
4. If you are using Jaws for Windows version 2.00.28 or later,
copy OPENBOOK\UTILS\SSIL.DLL to your JFW directory. Also copy
OPENBOOK\UTILS\OPENBOOK.JCF to the JFW\SETTINGS\ENU directory.
If you have an earlier version of Jaws for Windows, you should
request an update.
5. If you are using Jaws for Windows version 3.00.00 through
3.00.61, copy OPENBOOK\UTILS\SSILTK16.DLL to the JFW30
directory. This will overwrite an incompatible version of
SSILTK16.DLL that was shipped with these particular versions
of Jaws.
6. To use Braille in Jaws with Open Book, in OPENBOOK.INI set
Braille=0 and Caret Tracking=1 1 6.
7. To switch easily between Open Book and SSIL-enabled screen
access programs other than Jaws, you must determine how to silence
speech and turn off keystroke monitoring from the screen access
program while you are within Open Book. If you do not do this,
you may hear the same words spoken twice -- once by Open Book and
once by the screen access program. Also, Open Book's menus may not
respond properly to the menu navigation keys.
Now that you have completed these steps, you should be able to
run Open Book in the presence of your SSIL-enabled screen access
program without encountering problems. You should also be able
to launch other Windows programs from within Open Book without
encountering speech conflicts.
