I would appreciate some comments on using jfw, an alva braille line, and
rumba to access an AS400 with 5250 emulation.
Previously my client who is an rpg programer, successfully accessed the
AS400 under DOS, using an Alva, with no speech, but he now has a requirement
to do so under NT.
I first of all attempted to use Netsoft, as there are scripts for this
software. I was able to track the cursor (after changing the caret detection
rate to 2 in the netsoft configuration file, in the menus, but as soon as I
went into a sub screen, then JFW got lost.As soon as I cancelled out,
returning to the menus, then JfW returned.
I then used Rumba, even though there are no scripts for it.
I first of all changed the default terminal script name to match the
program.
The result seemed very good. The cursors were tracked in all screens,
however, the braille line, an Alva ABT380, kept flicking displayng the top
line of the screen for about a second, and then returning to the correct
position on the page.
I was able to minimize this behaviour by changing the refresh rate of the
jfw cursor in the terminal config file, and although the rate of flicking on
the alva was reduced considerably, it still continued to move backwards and
forwards.
I also made changes to the emulation fcursor, changing its shape, and
switching off the blinking. The best results I found in this respect were to
change the cursor shape to an underscore character, and to leave blinking
on.
I also changed the cursor blink rate in NT, but to no avail.
An additional curiousity is that while tabbing through fields, the braille
tracks the cursor while jfw does not speak. In some cases jfw does track the
cursor change, as if you use the insert 8 key, you do get the right
information.
I have been told that the AS400 screens are standard throughout the AS400
world. With this in mind can anyone advise me how I might move forward,
either using Rumba, or alternatively a terminal emulator which does work
successfully with jfw. I am presuming that if an emulator package works with
jfw, then a braille line, supported by jfw, should also work! (Mad
tempestuous fool that I am)
