One thing about outlook express and internet explorer that a lot of new
users are not accustomed to is that you can not use the say all command, and
the read previous, current, and next line commands like you normally would
in editing type programs like microsoft word. Unlike other screen readers,
where you are able to read continuously, jaws only reads these type of
read-only screens, like thos in IE and with OE, one screen at a time. The
keys to read in this way are page up or page down. Usually, though, upon
accessing these messages with the enter key, their contents are read
automatically.
howver, if they are not, I usually press insert + f5 to reformat the page
and that usualy gets the reading going. When the curser stops at the end of
the scren you may hit page down to see if there is more of the message to
read.
There are two ways, however, that you can make jaws read line by line and
word by word like you wish but they require that you press control + page
down to scrol the screen. IN other words, they are limited to the text that
is currently on the screen. With the jaws curser, you can start reading the
current page by pressing control + insert + down arrow. When you hear
something in the middle of that screen like a name or URL that you want to
read more carefully, you can press the control key to stop speech, and with
your navigation keys on the jaws key pad o rnumpad, you can move to the
specific location you want to read and check that word's spellling, if you
want, like you normally would when in a word processor. If you would like
to continue reading the rest of that screen, you may press insert + down
arrow key to do a say all command. When the reading is stopped you can
press page down again to read. You may discover this as you go along that
this key, when you get to the last page, does not stop reading when you get
to the last screen. What it does instead is start reading that same last
page over again. So, a preferd key, for me to use, that does the job correc
tly, as you are reading your messages, is the space bar key. When you are
done, you can hit escape and arrow down to the next message in your inbox.
Oh yeah, sometimes people leave their addresses or the URL to their home
page. One easy way to get to this with Outlook express is by pressing tab
and shift tab within that message body window, or by pressing insert + f7 to
bring up a list like in IE. When you type your messages, in outlook
express, it looks for those special characteriestics Like the @ sign in an
e-mail address to give it a hiper text quality like with links in a web
