A few days ago I wrote about installing jfw on a new computer with Windows 98 and its failure to talk on the following day. I want to thank the many forum people for their abundant and confusing responses, including suggestions that we re-install Windows 98, download and install a 16-bit driver from a site called atitech.ca, change about 20 items in our Windows 98 configuration, etc. etc. Henter Joyce had little to contribute except that maybe I am in the wrong time zone and I should re-install jfw. We cannot move the school to a different time zone, and re-installing Jfw did not help. Someone else sent me an attached file with a driver that took almost 15 minutes to download and about two pages of instructions for installing it. Mysteriously, jfw started talking again this afternoon - all by itself. I have no idea why, and I hope it keeps talking. I am glad I didn't follow any of the suggested procedures. Changing to a 16 bit driver and changing configuration files might well have impacted other programs. I am not even sure Windows 98 would run on 16 bits. I might also add that my old DOS educational games are still working and teachers and students at the school appreciate them. They have little other software, except for MSWORKs that came with the computers. This is a poor school in a poor country. The bank that contributed the computers failed to provide for software and the schoolhas a minimal budget. They had to run a fund raiser to get money for copier paper and fire extinguishers.
