paragraph markers in word

To show spaces and paragraph marks, go to 

format
alt+t (tools)
tab to options

Among the options, to be checked or unchecked, are 

spaces
paragraph marks
hidden text (whatever that is)

and 'all.'

Once these options are checked they won't go away for me unless I uncheck
the 'all' option as well as the specific ones I want.
