I would suggest that you contact Henter-Joyce in regard to the
authorization problem as they indicated to me last fall that their new
authorization should have solved that problem. We have a Toshiba Libretto
model 50 at our technology center and I was able to get an authorization on
the Libretto by connecting the unit to a desktop system and using intersrv
and interlnk to get the authorization disk read using the floppy drive on
the desktop system. I would mention that we had the same idea, but the big
concern is that most software now comes on cdrom, and the price for an
external cdrom drive drives the price of this unit back up to a point that
makes justification of this unit less desirable. And, we have found that
most of the clients that we have shown the unit to do not like the size of
the keys for doing touch typing.
However, we have started recommending laptop computers with speech, etc. in
many cases instead of a notetaker and a desktop computer system, especially
for college students and others who are on the go a lot.
We have found the IBM Thinkpads to be very acceptable for performance with
speech and ocr products sch as Kurzweil1000 or Openbook or a commercial ocr
product with JFW speech, and it reduces costs for a total system and
notetaker by at least $1000 while providing just as reliable access and
functionallity.
