     Thanks for your response.  At least I am not alone (strange music).
     
     Seriously though, I think I have found a work around.  I used the 
     format mode (Insert and the keypad 8 key twice in succession), and to 
     my surprise this seems to work quite well.  I found this mode by 
     accident, as I have never used it before.  I looked in the default 
     script, and there it was.  It doesn't explain why it doesn't function 
     properly in normal mode though - but that's another story.
     
     Try it, I find it really improves editing pages, after all if I just 
     wanted to read a page I could use the Jaws cursor.  It was the editing 
     side of things that I was having problems with.

all I can contribute here is that I have a similar problem  it is not a 
configuration problem but a script might solve it.  try pressing escape 
or refreshing the screen.  I think I got it to work doing that but it 
was quite bothersome.
