with internet explorer 5 introduceing the ability to use multiple search engine
capabilities more than likely in time the built in to the browser meta search
tool will be sufficient for most end users.
while i e 5 has far more searching power than i e 4 browser, i am not trying
to say that it is as good as a stand alone meta tool search engine.
in fact it lacks the ability to add site specific engines to it, plus it does
not deliver on the promise to offer the same searching capabilities that the
browser has on the web to also work on ones own harddrive, the main reason
microsoft claimed that they wanted to integrate the browser to the operateing
system.
still it is a step in the right direction.
microsoft says a future version of power toys will add extra searcjh
capabilities to i e.
by the way their is a tape tutorial that introduces users to search engines,
from dean martinoe.
i thought new users would want to know about it, but personally i have not
used it so this is not a recommendation.
though i do recommend one learn a little about search engines, they help tame a
giant internet.
so if not this tutorial, try another, or just play around and get your hands
wet.

for raw beginners Dean did do a excellent job of demonstratein in his i e 3
tutorial how just knowing 4 extra things about a search engine could make a
world of differance.
those four things are
1. how to ensure that all answers will have the word being searched for
2. how to be sure that all answers exclude a word in the answer.
3. a command that tells the search engine to only find the answer in a title,
and not in the body.
so the answer is not just an obscure bit of information on the subject, but
the whole article will deal with it.
4. how to include extra terms in the search that may or may not be in the
answer.
for instance suppose you tell the search to be sure a persons name is included
that is a famous lawyer.
after his name you realize that many people have the same name.
lets say the lawyer is spence.
you may include some of the following terms.
cowboy
lawyer
brief
mob
now when youget your 2500 answers they will be ranked, and if an answer does
not have any of the additional terms it will come in last.
if it has all of them it comes in first.
this is much better than just putting them in alphabetical order.
