this might be a good one for a faq.
If you want to sign up with an isp, you do not need to use their
software if they are a flat internet provider. exceptions to this for
proprietary reasons can be:
aol, Prodigy if they still exist, compuserve <alive and well> and others
which bost internet connectivity as part of their services.
Having said that, here is all you need to provide to the internet
connection wizard that comes standard with windows.95 and .98 and any
email program. I've done this countless times and it works like a
charm.
1> the number to be dialed,
2> your new user id
3> your password,
4> any special requirements for the modem connection or choice of
connection if not a modem which you can pick from the list,
5> your incoming and outgoing server names. often, they are
Mail.providerprefix.com
for example:
mail.clark.net
I know this might be considered slightly off topic, but if it is, I
apologize but it may allay many fears and cause fewer headaches for you
in the future or other listers. If any information above is not known
to you then you may need to contact the isp and ask for the steps to set
up their service using your existing software. There is also often a
web page addressing the issue.
