I think this is an application thing. MS Word and WordPad, and quite a
number of other programs exhibit this behavior, but Notepad does not. I
rather wish none would. :-) It seems to be a difference between JAWS' and
Windows application definitions of what a "word"is. JAWS counts anything
delimited by spaces as a word; Windows programs like Word define a word as
a series of characters of the same class (e.g., letters or punctuation
marks). Thus, the line
She said, "Help me!"
contains four words to JAWS and Notepad, but seven to Word and WordPad.
One of those oddities I end up explaining to my students in time...
