Where to begin: First, my very hearty thanks to all of you who responded to
my inquiryon the use of the Access Plug-in for the Adobe Acrobat Reader.
The various suggestions forced me to learn more about my computer, and I
benefitted immensely -- even from the very cryptic ones. Second, I'm glad
to say that my part of the riddle has been solved. For the benefit of those
whose difficulties with the plug-in are similar to mine (i.e. who have
successfully downloaded the plug-in but can't get it to do what it's
supposed to do), here are some brief suggestions.
First, regardless of the folder into which you unzip the plug-in, the
two .api files must be in the plug_ins subdirectory of the acrobat3\reader
subdirectory. If you unzip the beta file into the plug_ins subdirectory, an
access32 sub-subdirectory is created. You must copy the .api files from
that subsubdirectory into the plug_ins subdirectory, so that they are at the
same level as the Access32. In other words, do not assume that simply
because the .api files are in a subdirectory in the plug_ins subdirectory,
they're therefore accessible to the Acrobat reader. While copying the two
.api files (access32.api and infer32.api), you should also copy the .pdf
files, but this time into the help subdirectory of the acrobat3\reader.
