What's current compatible virus protection software with JFW? Also, was
Macaffey's virus shield or virus scan software responsible for the previous
incompatibility? I think those packages and the windows and dos versions of
jaws were on this system when it was upgraded to windows 98. Afterwards I
couldn't get jaws for dos running again. Possibly something happened to the
keys for jaws for dos in that process but what did the actual damage I don't
know now and am in no mind to speculate. One thing I've thought about was
that if virscan trashes keys in the root directory it might be useful to
have a c:\jfw32\safe directory where copies of the key file reside and then
see if virscan destroys the key files in both the root directory and the
c:\jfw32\safe directories. If only the root files are destroyed by its
operation, it might be possible to have jfwrest.bat in c:\jfw32\safe which
does three tests before restoring the key files to the root directory.
1) test for presence of file in c:\jfw32\safe directory; if successful move
onto next test, if not write message advising user to reinstall jfw and
exit.
2) test for existence of jfw key file in root directory and if found move
onto next test;
otherwise copy c:\jfw32\safe\jfwxxxx.dat to root directory and exit.
3) binary file compare two jfw key files in c:\jfw32\safe and root for
corruption.
if virscan leaves the one alone in c:\jfw32\safe, overwrite root directory
file with safe file directory key file.
Of course none of this may be feasible if the real problem is virus shield.
