Audible.com is a website that offers quite a variety of material in
audio-format ranging from such daily material as PBS' The Nightly Business
Report and customized versions of the Wall Street Journal, to unabridged
versions of bestsellers and quite serious nonfiction works. It uses its own
proprietary text to speech program; not RealPlayer. JFW works well with the
program, if you can download it unto your desktop. While I had no
difficulty downloading the promotional material unto my desktop, I've had a
lot of difficulty downloading the m,ore interesting purchases.
Unfortunately, the customer service is not particularly forthcoming with
help. If they ever get around to ironing out the kincks in the system, it
would be a most useful program. In many ways, their offerings are a good
deal more current and more substantial than those available via Realplayer
(e.g. Blackstone Audio), and most significantly, you actually purchase the
product, download it unto your desktop (or unto a mobile unit), so that you
do not have to be online in order to use the material.
