simon no you do not need a scanner, plus i think wind fax is using a much
newer engine, i say this because the version in win fax 8 was all 32 bit code
with multi threading.
at that time only the very best programs in the o c r market had those
features.
like omni page 8.
remember this, when arkenstone first released its product people bought o c r
that was 98 percent accurate on good docs.
the fax was only 75 percent back then, translation not good enough for the
blind.
of course those programs where win 3.1 aps.
today omni page is 93 percent for fax and 99 for good docs.
so while use able it will depend on how the fax was scanned into the machine.
today fax machines are 150 dot per inch, some day when scanning stuff gets
real cheap they will improve this.
when it happens blind people will be able to enjoy better ability to use o c r
engines on the material from faxxes.
by the way some say 95 percent is the line where o c r becomes use able for the
blind.
so with certain high quality faxes you will be in that ball park, with others
you will not.
with that said, i did not want you to be disappointed.

oh yeah one other thing, all o c r packages are not equal on all types of text.
in the past omni page sucked when it came to fax documents.
word scan used to be the best here.
but omhni page 9 is in the same ball park with its competition.
mainly because of improvement in its ability to look at stuff that is not
perfectly straight on the paper.
most people making faxes just throw the doc on, and could care less about
alignment.
now realize that faxes one can download from companies with info about
products are usually scanned in with a flat bed, like the h p, then maybe even
touched up once in the p c.
these docs are of the highest quality, and should offer better success rates.
