Hi Paul,
JFW can work pretty well with MegaDots. There are a few things you will
want to
adjust. This may look complicated, but the MegaDots Preferences changes in
Step
4 appear to be the critical ones.
1. Choose the JFW selection when the MegaDots Install process asks which
screen reader is installed. (Not sure what this does, since there aren't any
JFW config files that I could find, but it must be good!)
2. The latest MegaDots gives you the option of installing a standard Start
Menu
shortcut & hotkey for MegaDots. This is great.
3. The standard rules for running JFW with a DOS app apply: (DOS window, not
full-screen; set Screen Echo to SayAll, etc.)
4. There are five settings you will want to change (or at least double check)
in the Preferences in MegaDots. You may have trouble finding them with Jaws,
because the "normal" display mode doesn't work very well. Use the JAWS Cursor
at first to find the Preference options & mouseclick just to the right of the
prompts to activate each item. Then pressing one of the available letter
options will change that particular setting. (F10 brings up the Megaddots Menu
Bar, F2 displays a list of available choices for each Preference item.)
So, hit F10 for the Megadots menu bar, P for Prefs., E for Editor. Here's what
to change:
Set Braille Mode to A for ASCII.
Set "Simple Windows" to Yes.
Set "Unframed text windows" to Yes.
Set "Use Screen Reader" to Yes.
Set "Use Braille Display" to Yes (if you have a Braille display).
This will display all the menu items down the left side of the screen. It will
also let Jaws follow the cursor in the menus & in the main text. It will also
display translated Braille as you would expect (although Jaws will
pronounce it
very strangely). Otherwise Braille shows up as visual dots on the screen.
5. Finally, as of January this year there is an update patch on the Web for
Mega that is pretty simple to download and install. (
