well here are a couple of tips to determin if wes law is suffering from memory
problems.
one thing you will need to do is remove office start up, from being loaded
into memory.

this is loaded automaticly
in the start up folder,
which is the dos equivvilant of autoexec.bat.

one can also unload task scheduler from loading
into memory
both of these memory hogs slow win 98 boot up to a crawl.

here is how to remove task manager which can not be done in start up.

here is how you can block this memory hog from loading.
double click the task scheduler icon in the system tray.
to open the schedule folder
select advance
then stop using task scheduler

this will make the icon disappear from the system tray and when you reboot it
will still not be their.
instructions for reverseing this, so task scheduler will load.

in win 98 hit enter on my computer
then double click the schedul task icon.
select advance
then start using task scheduler

now we cover office start up.

their is a program, its file name is m s config.exe.

if a person selects it in windows 98 it is system configuration utility, and
it has the ability to keep applications from loading in the start up menu.

when a person prevents a program from loading, they can then run their system
and check to see if that solves a problem.
if it does not then a person can go back into system configuration utility and
have it lload the program in start up.
also not loading in start up is a good way to trouble shoot the program for
lack of memory .
if your system performs better in windows when you tell it not to load office,
that program uses a large chunck of memory, if it results in your system being
more stable then it is possible that you do not have enough ram.
one more tip i do not load the office component just because it speeds up my
system while operating and also during boot up.

now you need to know that when you go into configuration utility that as you
arrow up and down hitting the space bar, jfw will not let you know what is
checked and what is not checked.

well in the win 98 mail box is a method one can use to label these so one will
know what is checked.

personally i do not do this.
reason being, that when one disables something here in system configuration
utility, it appears in a folder under programs called disabled start up
programs.

by the way do not look for this folder untill after you have disabled a
program with configuration utility, reason being is that untill you do the
folder is not created.

[ now i assume you have disabled a program, here are the steps to see what
programs are disabled.
come back to this bracketted info later if you have not yet disabled anything.
hit the win 98 start key

hit letter p for programs

hit letter d for disabled start up programs.

my systems says office start up

because that is the only thing i disabled.
if you look for it and can not find it down arrow to start up folder which is
in the same menu.
their you can see what is loading in start up]

now back to how to use system configuration utility.

hit windows 98 start key

hit letter p for programs

hit enter on accessories

arrow to system tools and hit enter

arrow to system information and hit enter

alt key plus letter t key keystroke

this puts one in tools, arrow up to system configuration utility and hit enterr

this tool is actually the same as the file m s config

now you need to realize that this page is a multipage dialogue box, also called
a control tab by microsoft.

such a layout has more than one page.

this layout is the same used by properties sheets if you are familar with them.

so here is how to use this powerful option for disableing applications from
loading.

i want to say that each page in this multipage dialogue box represents a
differant way that windows 9 x loads stuff into memory.

though it does not cover all methods.

so depending on the application you will pick the page or method used by that
application.
or one can use these methods to trouble shoot, for instance at the bottom here
i tell the user how to prevent 3.1 aps from loading.
this can serve to trouble shoot.

here we shall have to go to the last page.

we are currently on the top visual tab.
it says general tab in jfw, the fact it says tab ensures you are on the visual
tab that indicates what page you are on.
with that said, you can right arrow to change the page.
one has to be on this tab to change pages with the arrow keys
right arrow 5 times until it says start up tab.
now you are on the last page.
tab down to the list box.
use the p c cursor to move down through the choices.
this will eventually say office start up.
hit space bar to make sure it is not loading in the start up menu
tab to o k and hit enter

in this example i pick m s word, or more accurately office 97.

i know office 97 uses the start up to load part of its code during the boot up

now i shall repeat the instructions, but this next part also includes
additional stuff beginners should not mess with.

if programs that are not in system.ini or win.ini and are not in the
start up folder
launch at start up, and you want to disable them, or even if you want to dis
able programs in the start up folder do the following.
two other methods of launching are to put a icon into the start up folder, or
to put command lines in the registry in certain locations.

win 98 has a new tool that can help out.

hit start
hit run

then type

msconfig

and then hit the click o k.

when the system utilities appear click the start up tab
this will display a list of all applications that are launched from the
registry or from the start up folder.
check the box next to each application that you want to prevent from
starting in the future.

beginners stop here and hit o k, or if you are more advance or trouble
shooting you can disable win 3.1 with steps below
remember if you use keynote multi media software speech this may disable it.
reason being it is old 16 bit code loaded in win 3.1 components.

while their click the win.ini tab

then double click windows or click
the plus sign to expand it.
then uncheck the boxes for the
load=
and also uncheck the
runs=

this will disable applications that are launched from their.
when finished click o k, the system will want to restart your p c.
click yes to try it out.
one can change the settings by changeing the mark in the check box back to
the way it was.
