Jane you need to open the default config file. Do the following insert f 6
regardless of what configuration file opens and this will depend on what
application you are focused on press the alt key to bring up the menu bar.
Arrow down to open default file and press enter again press the alt key and
arrow to the right once than up arrow till you get to synthesizer options
press enter one of the check boxes is allow wave sounds with software
synthesizer. Check it and tab to the ok button press enter than alt f 4 and
the computer should prompt you to save the file press enter on yes and your
wave files should play. Note depending on several hardware and software
capacities will depend on how successful wave files are at playing when you
are using a software synthesizer. Generally speaking the faster the
computer and the more powerful the sound card the better the wave files will
play when a software synthesizer is sharing the card. Good luck.
