I use the Alva ABT340 with Windows 95 and run JFW without Braille regularly.
When I need Braille I just turn it on and if it doesn't show the current
line it will show the next one. My wife never uses Braille at all. I never
have a lockup regardless of whether I have RunJawsFirst checked (as you
probably do in a network environment).

My only theory is that perhaps the configuration file did not get saved when
you unchecked the BrailleShowLoadError box. This checkbox is available only
when editing the default configuration file, but you might make sure you're
on the default file just in case you managed to get it in some
application-specific configuration file.
