How free is free? Some of them will still work but their advanced
features stop working after the trial period is over. Some of them
won't let you talk to registered users until you register, so as long
as the person you wanna talk to doesn't register their copy, you're
OK.
The freest one I've ever seen which is truly free--free of cost, free
of servers--is Intel's Internet Party Line, which is very hard to find
because Intel doesn't even support it, but it does work.
