I am writing concerning numerous inquiries about problems with the scripts
for Instant Messenger. As the author of these scripts, allow me to make
several short remarks.
First, the scripts that are presently available site work best with older
versions of Instant Messenger, a program that has changed in several
significant ways with each new version. Hence, independently of which
version of JFW users might have, if recent versions of Instant Messenger
have been downloaded or are invoked, the scripts will not work well.
Second, With each subsequent upgrade of JFW, trivial differences in
functions, constants and such have requiredd very minor changes by me to
allow for insertion of one's own screen name and recompiling of the
scripts. I am to receive my upgrade, 3.3, shortly and, when I have had a
little time to play around with that new version and Instant Messenger, I
will send a new set of scripts that will hopefully be backward compatible,
at least to 3.2.
However, I do not intend, personally, to try to keep up with A O L and
upgrades to Instant Messenger. In my note, to be posted in a couple of
weeks, I will indicate which versions of Instant Messenger we recommend for
the scripts I have written. If users wish to take advantage of new
features in the newest upgrades of Messenger, then supplemental or
different scripts will have to be written by someone to accommodate them.
