Hi Everyone.
I would like to take a few moments of your time to discuss subject lines.
The purpose of a subject line is to clearly state what the message is going to be
about. Subject lines like: Please help; Request for help; A couple of questions; etc
are not clearly stating what the message is on. the problems with these types of
subject lines, are:
1. You are reducing the chances of someone reading your message and giving you
assistance.
2. People who are subscribed to several mail lists, will not have the time to read
every single message. Therefore they will 9 times out of 10, delete the above mention
messages without reading them.
So it is very important for you to have clear subject lines that gives a snap shot of
what the message is going to be about.
Since most of us use synthesizers for reading our messages. It is very important that
you structure your subject line in a manor that reduces listening time. The
suggestion that Jim Snowbarger gave is an excellent one. I would like to expand his
idea of having the application first then JFW to the following structure:
<application name, breif description of problem, jfw version>
I believe that this structure would assist people with quickly browsing messages.
Also, remember, if you change the thread of the message. Make sure that you change
the subject line. I have come across to many messages where the person did not change
the subject line and they were talking about something completely different. I found
this very annoying. There is no excuse for this to happen. People have to spend the
time to learn their email programs and this mail list is not here for that.
If everyone could follow these guidelines, then it would help everyone.
