Just wanted to post a brief update about the unexplained crashing problems,
and what I've done that seems to have fixed it.

1. I updated my version of McAfee, and found a small virus. It doesn't
seem to have done any damage, but it was in there.

2. Cleaning out old startup files and re-arranging the startup sequence
seems to have done most of the good that was done. It appears that some
files were not removed when the applications were uninstalled, and so there
were hooks all over the startup. Very ugly.

So far, this seems to have solved most of the problems. I also upgraded to
Netscape 4.61, but it's too early to be sure yet. I have been able to
re-engage Netscape's caching with no ill effect, and now the only errors I
get in network applications are GPFs instead of invalid page faults, so I
guess that's progress. I think there may be something funky coming through
my ISP to explain the rest of the problem.

Anyway, just wanted to let people know what had happened. Thanks to all
who wrote and offered very good advice.
