Yes I was. I use JFW 3.3026, and the DoubleTalk-PC synthesizer, and I
upgraded from 98 original release to 98 Second Edition. Speech stayed there
throughout the entire process, but since my wife was doing her Email across
the room at the time, I had sighted assistance on standby if needed! As it
turned out, it wasn't needed!
I don't know what the results would've been if I had been using a software
synthesizer, or an external synthesizer, since both the sound card and
serial ports get scanned during the process, and any driver lines in
Autoexec.bat might have been remmed out by the install process. Since the
DoubleTalk-PC uses no serial port, (as well as no interrupts), it wasn't an
issue at all.
As far as the 20-character CD key, I had someone read it to me, then I wrote
a script that typed in the key with a pause between each of the 4-character
groups. I then added that script to my SerialAndPassword script menu. This
script has all my different serial numbers and user names and passwords, and
when I need one of them, I hit the hotkey assigned to that list, then select
the desired from that menu and it is automatically entered! Sure beats
requiring sighted assistance for serial numbers!
There are a few items you'll need to reset to your liking, because it sets
them back to their defaults; Active Desktop, TweakUi settings, Folder
settings, etc.
You are given the option to save your current version's files, should you
ever want to go back to that version.
Be sure to copy your existing config.sys and autoexec.bat to a location
other than the root level of drive C:...after 98 installs, you can select
MsDos Prompt and copy them back to that location. 98 rems out a lot of
those items found in those files.
