Been sitting back reviewing comments for a while before I put my foot into
this. Been training blind students to use computers since before Windows
and have learned one thing very well. If its working don't mess with it.
As a corollary, just because a program is the first issued, doesn't mean
they got it right. Jaws may have been first, but even now, in my opinion,
its only a beta test version of a real program. Your hundreds of lines of
comments confirm this to me.
For those of you who can't access things with jaws in a work situation,
consider downloading and experimenting with outspoken. A few months ago,
facing 5 levels of software and interminable jaws scripting at a local
hospital's transcription department, we experimented with outspoken. It
achieved access with default settings right out of the box. No
modifications or programming was necessary. This is not intended as a promo
for outspoken. Just a reminder that no single program offfers complete and
reliable access at this time.
My focus has always been on getting the job done. Because we start with
jaws, doesn't mean we won't have to expand our tools to finish the job. If
Jaws won't do it, and tech support has no answer, Ted Henter deserves to
know every time, especially for seven hundred dollars. Its management and
marketing that need to hear this. If they listened to their own tech
support folks, we'd all have an easier time of it.
